Is multi-tasking among youngsters OK??

In General: I had been thinking about writing on this topic for quite some time now, but a comment on my blog made me start typing (Thanks Smith!!). There has been a lot of talk about the increasing multi-tasking among youngsters (and hey..I’m not talking about just teenagers…even my five year old nephew can do at least two things at a time), with mobile phones and computers grabbing most of the free time.

The article I read on The New York Times, cites Dr. Christakis, who says that, “parents are digital immigrants and children are digital natives”. This statement caught my attention the most, as I do think that different generations have different ways of working. Even though our brain works one thing at a time (or so the article says), it is so easy for us (as in younger people, though again my 5 year old nephew can teach me a thing or two about computers ;) ) to text while we browse through our e-mail with the ipod stuck to our ears. I agree this is NOT healthy. Especially when youngsters start texting while driving or during lectures or when their parents are scolding them!!!!

Personally, I also do several things at a time, but only to realise eventually, that I have not fully concentrated on any. Now that’s no good. Moreover, one needs to realise that social & digital media is only part of our life not all of our life. I do have friends outside my friend list on Facebook and the Followers’s list on Twitter. In fact, I personally know only a handful of people who are following me on Twitter.

This compulsive need to be connected all the time, to several things at the same time, might not be very healthy. Personally, I think it should be researched into as it might be something  like anorexia. You think you need to be connected…but do you really???

Even kids prefer to chat or play video games, rather than go out and play. Agreed that’s what they might like now…but is that fair to give them access to such a crude obsession so early in their life?? Times are changing, media is changing, media consumption habits are changing, but childhood and teenage is changing too…for the good or the bad…I can’t clearly say.

There are times on the weekend that I don’t feel like blogging. I feel like simply enjoying the afternoon sun, without having to check Twitter for RTs or Facebook for more fans or my blog for more comments. Is that a crime? Coz as they say…can’t I multi-task??

What’s your say?

30 days of OurWiredWorld

It’s been a month since I first wrote on OurWiredWorld. My inspiration came from all the people around me who use social media but still can’t differentiate a web browser from an operating system and those who are looking for a one-stop-shop where they can get their daily dose of social media news/views and even those who think social media is a fad….and lastly those who are making all the right moves and using social media creatively, innovatively and to their and our advantage.

A little thank you from my side to all those who visited OurWiredWorld and encouraged me to keep writing (ahem..blogging).  :)

Obama gets Nobel Peace prize. Twitter goes berserk.

ObamaIn General: So President Obama has been in office for just nine months and has already been declared the messiah of the world by winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Come on!!!!!! Agree Bush probably deserved the shoe that a journalist threw at his face, but does Obama truly deserve this title?? Bush sent troops to Afghanistan but Obama has not exactly called them back (in fact he has added more). Shouldn’t we have given him some more time to prove his intentions and walk the talk before lauding him with such a huge honour?? Personally, I really like President obama and think he will surely do all that he has promised and maybe this award should have been given to him, eventually. Here’s what the President feels, “To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who’ve been honored by this prize.”

If you want to know what people really think about this, search Twitter for Obama related Tweets and you’ll see it all. Crimson Hexagon has already analysed the Tweets about Obama winning the award and the statistics suggest that 69% of Tweets reflect that Obama has not done anything significant yet to achieve this. Read the complete Mashable blog with statistics here.

To be honest, my favourite Tweet was: Has anyone asked Kanye West what he thinks of Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize?  :)

Google explains what a web browser is

In Video:  Do you know the difference between a web browser, an operating system and a search engine? Well, do you even know what a web browser is? Chances are likely that those reading this blog would, but just incase you don’t, Google has attempted to break all myths and explain what a web browser really is and does. This might be because Google has been burning the midnight oil to get Chrome to cut its piece of the market pie that has so far been enjoyed by Internet Explorer and Firefox. Chrome even came out with designer themes including the likes of Dolce & Gabbana to pep up the scene. Now with Google Wave on its way, Chrome needs to become a household name to pave way for Wave’s success, knowing that Wave works best with Chrome.  Check it out:

WOMMA: How gen Y uses social media

498072_working_with_laptop6In General:Last week WOMMA held a webinar on the ‘online behavioural trends of gen Y’ , specifically looking at the age of  22-29, who are termed as ‘early careerists’. These are basically people who have recently graduated or are in the early stage of their career. Here are some of the findings as posted on the 360 Digital Influence blog:

  • Generation Y spends over 3 hours per day online
  • Early Careerists are health conscious, as they have a more balanced lifestyle due to watching generations before them spending too much time at work. With that being said, some of the most popular conversation topics among Early Careerists include lifestyle topics, such as food and cooking, music, money, clothing, politics, religion and school
  • Early Careerists use social media as an authentic extension of their personal relationships. They aren’t likely to befriend strangers online, or brands they aren’t fans of
  • “Quarter-life crises” has hit this generation especially hard. Early Careerists have been reared on meeting and often exceeding expectations, but due to the down economy, their post-graduation experience has generally been clouded with concern and pessimism
  • Value brands such as Ikea and Target are among the most discussed brands. In this economy, Early Careerists are especially focused on finding value and affordability
  • Females tend to drive more conversations across the social web, as they like to share their finds and deals with their online networks

Honestly I’d like to see some substantial research (or perhaps do some one day) on how women use social media. A lot is being said about women being more social and thus being more active online, but the other theory of men being more technologically prone also peeps in. So what is the truth? Is there actually a difference in the way men and women use social media??

Hotmail hacked. Be safe, change your password.

hotmail-passport-forgotIn News:Microsoft users have been the victim of pishing. For those of you who don’t know about pishing, it’s the criminal act of taking personal details like username, password, credit card number etc from unsuspecting e-mail users by pretending to be trustworthy. The information that 10,000 Hotmail users have been attacked under a pishing scheme was first published by technology blog Neowin. It stated that an anonymous user has posted details of Hotmail accounts on October 1 on a site called pastebin.com. The site which is basically used by developers to post and share codes had details of over 10,000 accounts starting from A through to B. Those posted included @hotmail.com, @msn.com and @live.com accounts. Most of the accounts are said to have been based in Europe and have now been taken off the website.

Microsoft told the BBC that an investigation has been launched. A consultant at a security firm Sophos however told BBCthat this list might be a subset of a larger list and the scale of the pishing attack has not been estimated yet.

All Hotmail users are advised to change their passwords to be better safe than sorry.
